President’s Year-End Letter

As we finish the last chapter of 2016, it is time to take a peek at the prologue for 2017 in anticipation for what the next 12 chapters hold for all of us. I am in the unique position to observe what companies are currently doing and planning to do in the next 12–18 months in employee development. TrainingPros supports some of the most employee-focused companies in the world like AT&T, American Express, State Farm, Publicis Media, Atmos Energy, Synchrony Financial, Kimberly-Clark and many others.

These are companies that understand the value of investing in their employees. What we have observed is that, in general, the content and skills in which employees are receiving training is not changing. Organizations continue to provide training for onboarding, compliance, safety, job-specific procedures, new business applications, sales effectiveness, customer service, product knowledge, people management and soft skills. What is and has been changing is how training is delivered to employees AND the speed at which learning programs need to be developed. Faster deployments are in response to the speed at which businesses are now moving.

Content in Moodle – More LMS Exploration

In the last few blog entries on Learning Management Systems (LMSs), we have installed a local copy of Moodle and added a course and some students. At this point, I am assuming that you have a working copy of Moodle on your PC. Before we start, I would like to restate one point. The goal here is not to learn Moodle in order to adopt it for your business. It is to allow you to work with a real LMS and to make you conversant and comfortable with basic LMS activities. The overall goal of this series has been to provide the background you need to write an effective RFP for a new LMS and to evaluate the responses you receive.

The Many Benefits of ATD Involvement

In my job as a relationship manager with TrainingPros, I interview a lot of talent development consultants. Some of them are seasoned professionals, and some are just getting started, but one piece of advice I find I give to almost every candidate is to get involved with their local chapter of the Association for Talent Development (ATD). Depending on the individual, the reasons often vary. Through this process, and through my own involvement with the Atlanta ATD chapter, I've discovered the following benefits of volunteering with your local chapter:

Fill In Resume Gaps

Serving your ATD chapter is a great way to fill in transition time between jobs - especially if it's a leadership role such as serving on the board. This shows potential employers that you were using your time productively and honing your skills, both the skills needed for the chapter role, such as technology or marketing, and also valuable leadership skills.
