Transforming Critical Incident Crisis & Trauma

Course Number: TP-MC003

About This Course

In a world where encounters with sources of aggression and violence, trauma and grief are all too common, understanding the dynamics of workplace “critical incidents/hazardous events” – both for those directly impacted and for employees encountering second-hand effects – is vital. Whether it's a violent encounter with a patient or colleague, the sudden death of a beloved manager, or a tragedy to a teammate outside of work, this workshop will help managers and employees prepare for and proactively-productively respond to critical events, in an array of professional and personal roles. Critical Incident Intervention demands the integration of head and heart when connecting with and comforting those caught in the radiating circles and emotional shadows of trauma and grief.

By the end of this "Get FIT" -- FUN-Interactive-Thought-provoking -- Workshop, participants will have working knowledge in the following key areas, including:

  • Overview of Stress, Crisis, and Trauma, including different types of trauma and grief reactions and predisposing factors, and goals of critical incident and trauma debriefing and grieving
  • Dynamics of Loss and Grief, understanding grief stages and grief ghosts, the difference between Feeling Sorry for Yourself and Feeling Your Sorrow, and the healing path of grief
  • Critical Incident Settings and Use of Personal-Professional Self, including relaxed attention and detached involvement, and compassionate verbal and nonverbal communication
  • Key Critical Incident Communication Skills; engaging in reflective listening, ask courageous “good questions,” and how to tentatively reflect and appropriately reveal
  • Key Intervention Process Tools and Techniques; from leading to group facilitation; trauma & grief orientation-engagement recipe, and carefully using healing & harmonizing humor
  • Taking Care of the Critical Incident Caregiver; preventing and recovering from burnout; learn relaxation-visualization, and the Stress Doc’s Natural SPEED Formula for Stress Resiliency
